loved this scene esp bernie saying to el in that marriage i was suffocating i had to get out and in this life i feel so free, i can actually breathe, are they trying to tell us that el is not happy in his own marriage and with a new life he can have with a very special woman in his life(liv) that he can be alive again

No I don't believe the writers are trying to tell us that. i believe that the writers are telling us that Elliot has learned what not to do what his father did- he is living his father's life as a cop but unlike his father, Elliot kept his pants zipped up while his father chased after nurses.
